Hi! I’m Jammica, nice to meet’cha! I’m a proud Norfolk resident, Urban Ag advocate and Environmental Steward. I’m passionate about our planet and have worked in the “green” field for about 10 years as a Regional Environmental Outreach & Education Coordinator, an Environmental Marketing Rep as well as an enthusiastic volunteer. I currently work for Keep Norfolk Beautiful. I'm a member of the Norfolk Food Policy Council, a FEAST VA facilitator, a K.U.S.P volunteer, and I'm on the board of directors at The Fred Heutte Center in Norfolk, VA. I'm also a Master Gardener Volunteer with the Virginia Cooperative Extension program and I help work on projects with the non profit Support & Feed organization. I enjoy healthy eating, gardening, learning about innovative environmental and agricultural techniques and educating kids about the environment while opening their eyes to the immense opportunities awaiting them in the agricultural career space. It is also my absolute purpose and promise to help make Norfolk Virginia THE greenest city on the East Coast.

Jammica Boone is a Virginia native with a passion for environmental stewardship, urban agriculture and healthy eating. Upon moving to NC at the age of 10, she learned to appreciate nature in a big way. Growing up in a super rural area, one of her earliest jobs was working on a tobacco farm. It was there that she developed a love of nature watching how insects, animals and plants alike interacted with one another. Later she attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro NC where she pursued a degree in Mass Communications. While in college, she began to learn more about the importance of a plant based diet for personal and environmental health.

She eventually moved back to Virginia where she continued to educate herself about healthier life choices which inspired her to seek training in Permaculture. She then enrolled in a permaculture certification program in the state of Florida. As a result, she gained a better understanding of environmental awareness through the hands on curriculum of the program, which consisted of living outside in nature for research and development, learning to prepare vegan and vegetarian meals, eating a plant based diet and volunteering at many different types of farms in various parts of the state.

The time spent in Florida ignited a fire within to change her lifestyle completely. Upon returning to Virginia, Jammica decided to adopt a few of the principles she'd learned in permaculture. This would influence every aspect of her life starting with her employment. Jammica proclaimed that moving forward her actions must be good for the planet, good for all living things involved and the surplus acquired must be shared just as it is in nature.

She would then take a massive cut in pay to work as a manager and social media specialist for a small, local, organic food co op called Organic Food Depot. This gave Jammica an opportunity to learn more about food production and the importance of knowing where our foods come from. Her connections there gave way to Cooking With Friends. A small social group she cofounded, consisting of those from the BIPOC community that would come together once a week to share vegan and vegetarian meals they'd prepared, in order to encourage healthy eating habits and learn from one another.

This later transformed into an environmental community engagement career as the Virginia Regional Education Outreach and Marketing Coordinator for Recycling Perks later known as Enviro Perks. In this position Jammica built ties with community leaders, local businesses and environmental organizations all over Hampton Roads including the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, Keep Norfolk Beautiful, Norfolk Master Gardeners and the Lafayette Wetlands Partnership just to name a few.

While volunteering, Jammica learned about the Virginia Cooperative Extension program and later became a Norfolk Master Gardener herself. Her eagerness to learn more about growing food landed her in the Urban Ag division of the Norfolk Master Gardeners where she currently volunteers at several gardens helping others to learn sound agricultural practices for growing food in urban environments. In her desire to build community through agriculture and healthy eating with a strong emphasis on environmental awareness, she also became a certified facilitator for FEAST VA and a member of the Norfolk Food Policy Council where she helps to eradicate food deserts through sustainable food sovereignty practices that work in concert with diverse, culturally relevant and inclusive methods as well.

Jammica currently works at Keep Norfolk Beautiful as an Environmental Outreach Assistant where she continues educating the public specifically about recycling, litter prevention and beautification. She also loves getting her hands dirty volunteering with the aforementioned environmental organizations and traveling to different gardens and spending time with family and friends teaching them about gardening and sharing healthy meals together.
