My name is Denise, and I am the founder and lead educator of NC Nature School, a nonprofit outdoor learning community dedicated to helping children and families cultivate meaningful relationships with the natural world through immersive, place-based education.

As an environmental educator, certified herbalist, and lifelong student of nature, I am passionate about creating experiences that inspire curiosity, wonder, resilience, and stewardship. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that education is most transformative when it engages the whole person: mind, body, heart, and spirit, and when learning happens through direct relationship with the land rather than only within the walls of a classroom.

I am also a descendant of the Southern Sierra Miwok and Mono Lake Paiute peoples. My Indigenous heritage has deepened my appreciation for reciprocity, observation, and the understanding that humans are not separate from nature but an integral part of it. While I recognize that I continue to learn from both Indigenous wisdom and modern ecological science, I strive to honor the values of respect, gratitude, and responsible stewardship in the way I teach and live.

Through NC Nature School, my goal is to help cultivate a generation of children who know the names of the birds, trees, fungi, and streams in their own communities, who feel a deep sense of belonging in the natural world, and who grow into compassionate caretakers of the Earth and one another. I believe environmental education is not only about conserving ecosystems. it is about restoring relationships between people, place, and the living world.
