  • I am currently developing and starting a small home outdoor program, on five acres in the Sierra foothills, primarily for students and their families who will benefit from outdoor learning experiences that provide sensitivity to sensory and/or learning needs, while providing challenging and fun activities. With a background as a special education teacher informing me, I will include activities that meet a variety of cognitive, cultural, and physical differences, focusing on experiential environmental learning experiences that provide layers of depth to the exploration.

From my first experiences camping with the YMCA in the San Gabriel Mountains, I noticed a sense of well-being and an “at home” feeling in the outdoors. My dream of sharing nature and how we, as humans, interconnect with our environment and all things in it began there. The dream remains alive. Over the years, I have shared my love of nature with my own children and students, and have added to my breadth of knowledge through on-going, active learning. While teaching high school students with emotional disabilities, for the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, I attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. There, I studied Educational Counseling with a focus on Experiential Environmental Learning, with hopes of starting the outdoor program I described above. I completed a year and a half of this Master’s program, leaving to care for my daughter who was diagnosed with cancer. Developing activities for students that provide hands-on experiences while also instilling love and a sense of responsibility to care for our Earth is an ongoing life choice.
