This June, the Outdoors Alliance for Kids (OAK) is launching an initiative to get one million kids outdoors by June 30, 2027. The One Million Kids Outdoors Initiative (1MKO) will inspire young people to live healthier, happier lives by connecting with the outdoors. Throughout the year, we will highlight stories of impact and grow the movement to connect more youth with nature.

What is One Million Kids Outdoors?
We know that the world feels really heavy right now. Amidst all the hardships happening in our world, the work this community does to connect children, youth, and families with the outdoors continues to bring joy and hope. Our new initiative, One Million Kids Outdoors (1MKO), will ensure that kids continue to have opportunities to benefit from time in nature.

Collectively, we are committed to ensuring one million kids have meaningful outdoor experiences by June 30, 2027. Throughout the year, we will highlight the stories of impact our program partners are delivering through storytelling, social media, and other communications.

To reach this number, we need to hear from YOU! If you are an organization that does direct programming with youth, we want to know how many kids you get outdoors!

How can you join the movement?
Share your work with us! Whether you are reporting on a specific outing or submitting your organization's impact number over a certain time period (monthly or quarterly data, for example), we want to hear from YOU! The stories of these events will be highlighted with the community and appear on a story map, capturing all the events working to get one million kids outdoors. Why Now?
Every day, this community is working to connect kids, families, and youth to the outdoors. We want to tap into the full potential of this incredible community by collecting and celebrating the work OAK members and partners are already doing to serve that shared purpose.

The world is heavy, but the work we do to connect children, youth, and families with the outdoors can transcend even the hardest times. At a time when youth mental and physical health are on the decline, OAK is committed to doubling down our efforts to ensure kids can continue being kids, especially during these tough times. 1MKO promises to get kids up, active, off their screens, and outdoors.

How will OAK be sharing these milestones with the public?
Once we have received your submission, OAK will be highlighting these outings on our socials—Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter (X) and through our newsletter. Not only are we excited to share your stories, but we would love for you to share each other's stories, and we encourage you to repost from your own accounts as well!
