I became an educator because I love learning, and I'm on a mission to ensure that all students have access to engaging, experiential, and culturally responsive learning opportunities that help them find their sparks. I believe that learning should foster awe and wonder and strengthen connections to ourselves, the land, and each other. It should be place-based, interdisciplinary, and driven by learners' own curiosities. I have a comprehensive background in outdoor and environmental education, project-based pedagogy and design thinking, and in leading professional development on a variety of topics.

Britt Usiak, Ed. M is the Founder and Director of EarthLab, an immersive environmental education organization in Central Virginia. She was raised in Virginia where she spent summers exploring the trails behind our neighborhood with friends and camping with family and her Girl Scout troop. As a high schooler, she didn’t see the connection or relevance of science class to the magic of exploring the natural world. It wasn’t until she was in her 20s, when she had the chance to experience National Parks Ranger Programs and bring a community garden to her middle school classroom that she began to connect the dots on the power of environmental education for learners of all ages. Since then, she's worked in education for over a decade, teaching middle school and high school math and science in public and private schools, worked in summer camps and after school programs, and supported schools and teachers as an instructional coach. She's also an avid gardener and holds a Certificate in Urban Agriculture, stewards a home-based permaculture project called Shorashim Microfarm, and has started three successful school and community gardens. Her approach is place-based, experiential, and rooted in learner’s curiosities. She holds a bachelor’s of science from Virginia Tech, a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and volunteers as a co-lead for Feminist Bird Club RVA and as a Virginia Master Naturalist.
