What Research on Early Childhood and Nature-Based Learning Tells Us About Practice
As someone who's spent years reviewing environmental education research, it was a pleasure to take on the task of reviewing key articles on early childhood and nature-based learning for the eeRESEARCH database.

The six papers gathered here are a varied set. They range from a two-week climate program in a single Greek kindergarten to a synthesis of 28 studies on what shapes children's connection with nature, and from a preschool bush immersion program in Melbourne to a proposed curriculum framework for kindergartens. But read alongside one another, several themes emerge that are worth practitioners' attention.
Young children are more capable than our programs often assume.
This is the thread running most consistently through the collection. Borgerding and Beaver note that educators frequently assume young children either lack the knowledge to engage with climate change or should be shielded from it. Gavrilas and colleagues set out to test whether the topic really is too abstract for 4- to 6-year-olds, and found children moving from imaginative guesses toward explanations involving cars, factories and everyday human activity. Kochanowski, Carr and Rossmiller make the point at the level of policy: they argue that dominant US definitions of "quality" in early childhood education still picture the child as dependent rather than as someone capable of acting on the world. The practical implication is not that we should teach climate science to preschoolers, but that low expectations may be shaping our programs more than the evidence warrants.
Concrete beats abstract, every time.
Where these studies report children grasping something, it is almost always through something they could see, touch or do. In the Greek study, melting ice cubes and heat trapped under glass appeared to do conceptual work that explanation alone would not. In the US climate camp, the ideas that shifted most were the tangible ones: refilling a reusable water bottle, turning off a light, growing vegetables. Borgerding and Beaver go further and suggest grounding climate change in local, visible changes — flooding, pests, seasonal shifts — rather than relying on verbal metaphors.
Give children actions they can genuinely take—and don't stop at the individual.
Borgerding and Beaver make a point that is easy to miss: young children often have very little control over recycling or composting at home, so actions requiring adult cooperation may not stick. Actions a child owns outright do. But their study also found children's ideas about *collective* action slightly declining over the week, which the authors suggest may reflect the camp's own superhero framing putting the individual at the center. Their recommendation — introduce collective action early and revisit it, rather than saving it for the last day — is one of the most directly usable findings in the collection.
Quality of experience matters more than hours outdoors.
Mockovčáková and Barrable's review makes this case most directly: across 28 studies, family values, the nature of the activity and even the weather appeared to shape children's connection with nature, while sheer frequency of outdoor visits did not reliably predict it. Xu and colleagues arrive somewhere similar from a different direction, arguing that nature play planned as an occasional add-on is unlikely to achieve much, and that aims, activities, delivery and evaluation need designing as one connected system.
Families are part of the program, not the audience.
Mockovčáková and Barrable go as far as recommending that interventions be designed at family level rather than aimed at individual children, on the basis that parents' own connection with nature predicted children's. The other studies echo this in smaller ways: parents in the Greek study reported new environmental talk at home; the take-home "lights out" sign was the camp element parents reported actually using; Xu and colleagues place parents in the design stage of their framework rather than at the receiving end of it.
Environmental learning and social-emotional development aren't separate agendas.
Watt and colleagues followed 83 children through a weekly bush immersion program and found teachers rating them as more prosocial and better at coping, with fewer behavioral difficulties, alongside their growing sustainable attitudes. There was no comparison group, so this needs holding lightly. But it's a useful argument to have available when nature-based provision is treated as an extra rather than as core to what a setting is trying to achieve.
