Empowering Young Minds: Reflections on the Global E-STEM Award Workshops in Gujarat

At a time when environmental literacy is no longer optional but essential, the Vikram A Sarabhai Community Science Centre (VASCSC) reaffirmed its commitment to meaningful science education through a statewide series of E-STEM workshops. Following its recognition with a Global E-STEM Award 2024 by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), sponsored by Pratt & Whitney, VASCSC translated this honour into action by reaching students across Gujarat, India, with focused environment and climate education programmes.
These workshops were designed primarily for students from underserved and under resourced communities. The aim was clear: to strengthen environmental understanding while nurturing curiosity and confidence in STEM learning. More importantly, the programme sought to help students see science not merely as an academic subject, but as a practical tool to understand and respond to real world challenges.
Across 20 workshops conducted in different districts of Gujarat, 1,235 students actively participated in immersive, hands-on learning experiences. Complex environmental concepts were made accessible through simple yet powerful experiments. This transformed abstract concepts like climate science into tangible learning experiences.

The workshops also introduced students to sustainable engineering ideas and nature inspired design. Biomimicry sessions encouraged participants to observe patterns in nature and apply them to problem solving. This shift from passive learning to design thinking proved particularly energising for many students.

Technology was thoughtfully integrated into the learning process. Students were exposed to environmental sensors, 3D printing, and introductory AR and VR applications. They tested soil pH, monitored air quality using simple petroleum jelly index cards, prepared seed balls for afforestation efforts, and built small composting units. Each activity connected scientific inquiry with everyday environmental responsibility.

Importantly, the entire initiative was aligned with the vision of India's National Education Policy 2020, which calls for experiential learning, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary approaches. The workshops reflected these principles by blending science, creativity, engineering, and environmental ethics into a coherent learning journey.
Creativity was not treated as secondary. Nature art sessions, environmental theatre, and green games created space for expression and collaboration. Students discussed issues such as sea level rise, biodiversity loss, and plastic degradation with surprising depth and seriousness. Many expressed a desire to take small but meaningful actions within their schools and communities.
The most encouraging outcome was not only the knowledge gained, but the confidence built. Students who initially hesitated to speak began presenting their ideas. Groups debated solutions. Questions became sharper. The workshops demonstrated that when provided access to quality learning environments, young minds respond with insight, imagination, and responsibility.
In a state like Gujarat, which faces recurring challenges such as heat waves, water stress, coastal vulnerability, and changing rainfall patterns, climate education cannot remain theoretical. Initiatives like the Global E-STEM workshops represent more than outreach activities. They reflect VASCSC’s long-term vision of nurturing scientifically informed, environmentally responsible citizens who can respond thoughtfully to local realities. By equipping young learners with practical skills, critical thinking abilities, and a sense of ecological responsibility, the Centre is investing in a generation that will not only understand climate risks but actively contribute to building resilient communities. In doing so, VASCSC continues its enduring mission of linking science with societal transformation.
