2017 Summer Professional Development Institutes
MITS Summer Professional Development Institutes provide grades 3-12 educators with opportunities to explore STEM content through inquiry-based activities and visits to field trip sites. All activities are designed to help educators meet State Frameworks and create interdisciplinary connections. Participants can choose to receive PDPs, or graduate credit and PDPs. 
 
One-Week Institutes for Grades 3-8 and Middle & High School Educators
*MITS will provide a follow-up curriculum planning session in the fall of 2017 at the school or district that sends 3 or more teachers to an institute
One-week Summer Professional Development Institutes for Grades 3-8 Educators combine content and skill development sessions. Visit each partner institution’s site for 1-2 days and participate in both hands-on inquiry investigations and content sessions. One-week Professional Development Institutes for Middle and High School Educators combine content and skill development sessions taught by scientists, content specialists and professional educators with field trips to area research labs, field sites and local businesses with product development laboratories.

Cape Cod Region 

  • One-Week Institute for Grades 3-8 Educators
  • Making Waves: Exploring Water and Marine Science to Engage Your Students in Inquiry
  • Partners: National Marine Life Center, Thornton W. Burgess Society Green Briar Nature Center, Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
  • Dates: July 10-14; June 10 On-Site Introductory Session; November 4 Fall Callback
  • Registration Fee: $375/participant; $350/participant for team of 2 or more teachers from the same school district; $325.participant for a team of 4 or more teachers from the same school district (discount applicable to Cape Cod only)
  • *MITS will provide a follow-up curriculum planning session in the fall of 2017 at the school or district that sends 3 or more teachers to an institute
  • PDPs and Graduate Credit: Framingham State University (3 credits, 67.5 PDPs, $225); 40 PDPs available without graduate credit.

  • New Visions for a Changing World: Towards a Pedagogy of Climate Change
  • Partners: Framingham State University College of STEM, McAuliffe Center for Integrated Science Learning, Center for Climate Change Education
  • Dates: July 10-14; June 10 On-Site Introductory Session; November 18 Fall Callback
  • Registration Fee: $375/participant; $350/participant for team of 2 or more teachers from the same school district
  • *MITS would provide a follow-up curriculum planning session in the fall of 2017 at the school or district that sends 3 or more teachers to an institute
  • PDPs and Graduate Credit: Framingham State University (3 credits, 67.5 PDPs, $225); 40 PDPs available without graduate credit.

  • One-Week Institute for Middle and High School Educators
  • Research and Resiliency: Investigating the Local Effects of Global Changes
  • Collaborators: Mass Audubon’s Endicott Wildlife Sanctuary, Plum Island Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research, Ipswich River Watershed Association, Ipswich High School, Boston University, Salem Sound Coastwatch
  • Dates: July 17-21; June 17 On-Site Introductory Session; November 4 Fall Callback
  • Registration Fee: $400/participant; $375/participant for team of 2 or more teachers from the same school district
  • *MITS would provide a follow-up curriculum planning session in the fall of 2017 at the school or district that sends 3 or more teachers to an institute

  • Dates: July 17-21; June 10 On-Site Introductory Session; November 4 Fall Callback
  • Registration Fee: $375/participant; $350/participant for team of 2 or more teachers from the same school district

  • One-Week Institute for Grades 3-8 Educators
  • Exploring the Berkshires: From the Top of its Mountains to the Bottom of its Ponds
  • Partners: Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), Center for Learning in Action (CLiA, Williams College), The Trustees of Reservations, MA Department of Conservation and Recreation​  
  • Dates: July 10-14; Half Day Introductory Session June 17; Half Day Fall Call-back November 4
  • Registration Fee: $375/participant; $350/participant for team of 2 or more teachers from the same school district
  • *MITS would provide a follow-up curriculum planning session in the fall of 2017 at the school or district that sends 3 or more teachers to an institute
  • PDPs and Graduate Credit: Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) (3 credits, 67.5 PDPs, $150); 40 PDPs available without graduate credit.

​​One-Week Computer Modeling Institute for Middle and High School Educators
Computer Modeling Can Do What? Meeting Your Curriculum Goals with Imagination Toolbox 2017  

  • In partnership with the MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program, the institute will provide an opportunity for middle and high school educators to use StarLogo Nova’s block programming platform and Imagination Toolbox curriculum materials to create computational models or simulations and will highlight some of the classroom-applicable aspects of coding. Across disciplines, coding can capture your students’ attention and engage their creativity and reasoning.

  • Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, 
    we are now able to offer scholarships of $75 per participant,
