IPA USA 2025 Conference, The Child's Right to Play, Right Now!

Child Advocates from around the world will gather in Louisville, KY, to celebrate, advocate, and attend sessions focused on the power of play, the power of nature, and the biological necessity of play for healthy development. You will meet others who are committed to child-led play, build or deepen friendships, explore ways to incorporate more play into every child's day, and learn about the amazing partnerships and collaboration happening in Louisville, KY
The conference starts Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Kentucky Science Center annex, located next door at 725 W. Main Street. Wednesday evening, you will explore the playful Kentucky Science Center, enjoy a reception, and celebrate the 2025 Child Advocacy Award recipients.
On Thursday, the day begins with a Keynote by David Reeks and Renata Meirelles, who produced the documentary Territory of Play, a film that showcases children's play in Brazil. The opening Keynote with David and Renata will reframe our thinking with "A Path to Connecting with Play." David and Renata help us "see" children differently. A great way to explain comes from Deb Curtis in the book Really Seeing Children:
"Seeing children is about seeing the details of their remarkable ideas and actions. Studying what you observe and seeing yourself as a teacher-researcher to find children’s skills and competencies enhances your own professional development and informs your practice when responding and planning for children. Seeing children’s astonishing ways brings the joy and wonder back to your teaching."
After the Keynote, the day is filled with amazing and inspiring sessions. The IMAX Theater at the Kentucky Science Center will host the Documentary Territory of Play with David and Renata for a Q&A.
An option is available for those who are interested in the PM sessions. If you attend sessions, please make your way to the IMAX Theater ASAP for instructions on boarding the buses to Bernheim Arboretum on Friday morning. After 5:00 PM, it's time to explore Louisville. Your evening is free.
On Friday, buses will transport conference participants to Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest for a full day of sessions, tours, lunch, an evening reception, and an optional sunset experience.
Saturday is Tour Day and will feature even more outstanding programs and collaborations. The conference will conclude with a Closing Session, where snacks, beverages, reflections, and a slideshow will bring the conference to a close. We hope you will join us for the Saturday evening party.
An optional Saturday evening dinner celebration event will feature a BBQ, a s'mores bar, dancing, laughter, a creative art experience, and fun.
