I'm Mac! I'm currently working at a school where I get to teach kids about environmental topics from composting to gardening. My K-5 kids learn how to properly dispose of food waste, the benefits of composting, and how this applies to our hands-on work in the garden.

Hi! My name is Mac and I am a California Climate Action Corps fellow working with a non-profit called Garden School Foundation. My main role in this position is teaching K-5 kids how to sort their food scraps from their trash so that the food waste can be composted. I teach them at the beginning of the term where each part of their lunch goes, and strengthen this knowledge for the rest of the year. I have many students who love to help sort food scraps, and it has been incredible to see their confidence for this process grow throughout the year. I also assist the garden educator at my school by helping with lessons. This includes keeping the kids engaged, answering their questions and leading my own lessons. In these classes we teach the kids about gardening, natural cycles, plant parts, and many other things they learn in science class that they get to experience hands on with us to strengthen their understanding. They also get cooking classes where they get to eat fresh produce from the garden and learn new and creative ways to try new foods. It's amazing to see the kids realize the compost they add to the garden beds during class came from their own food scraps, and that the lettuce being fertilized with it will be an ingredient in their upcoming cooking class. I love being able to work hands on with this cycle, and passing it on to the kids is even better.
