WWF Request for Proposals: Food Waste Warrior Curriculum Design Improvement Project

II. Project Background and Objective
Wild Classroom is WWF’s signature school program aimed at educating and empowering
students. One part of the Wild Classroom curriculum focuses on food waste reduction and
understanding the inter-relationships of food production, global resource demand, and wildlife
conservation. From 2017-2019, WWF developed the initial draft and toolkit of the Food Waste Warrior
curriculum and has been piloting it in schools across the US.

WWF is now working to expand the program in collaboration with Kroger stores and the Kroger
Foundation, in alignment with their Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative. Our overarching goal is to
increase food waste awareness across the country, collect ongoing and accurate data on food waste from
schools, and align efforts with existing state and national educational standards so that food waste
becomes culturally unacceptable and prevention becomes routine. WWF seeks to facilitate K-12 food
waste reduction strategies by also leveraging tools and programs established by the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other partners.

WWF is looking to improve upon the current set of resources to make this as accessible as possible, and
to create a strategy to greatly expand its reach. Sub-grants and/or contracting agreements will be
considered and issued to reputable organizations who can help expand our resources and extend our
reach to as many teachers and students as possible.

The goals of any project proposal should aim to include the following:

• Simplify and vary the current curriculum to make it easy for a teacher to take on, deliver these
lessons and adapt to their situational needs
• Create a step-wise approach to the curriculum so it is feels achievable for a teacher AND/OR
student to take on (could be two versions)
• Create additional activities, resources for in class and take-home that address the specific needs
and learning styles of different grades/ages
• Validating direction to ensure improvements speak to teachers needs
• Test alternate, creative, innovative, or humorous approaches to making the content more
engaging
• Propose options to optimize content for both print and digital interactivity
• Develop strategy for content delivery to meet teachers and students where they are

III. Desired Qualifications

• A background in K-12 education and curriculum development and design
• Experience with different educational content delivery tools and mechanisms
• Access to educators for feedback
• Understanding of educator audience to provide guidance on content marketing
• Experience with or access to avenues for educator community engagement
• Creativity and innovative thinking in curriculum design
• Understanding the connection of this work to Word Wildlife Fund’s conservation mission and
food and markets work, a plus.

IV. Deliverables
The consultant/organization will develop revisions and additions to the current curriculum, along with
strategies for its expanded reach and engagement. Aesthetic design is welcome to be proposed, but not a
necessity.  Consultants should expect to share drafts and on scheduled conference calls and incorporate
feedback before a finalized product is delivered.
