Nature of Fire Webinar Series
October 3–17, 2023, 3:00 PM–3:45 PM PT / 6:00 PM–6:45 PM ET
This series will walk you through the use and implementation of our Nature of Fire Activity Collection.
Project Learning Tree Canada’s themed Activity Collections organize activities around a theme or topic. Nature of Fire features three PLT Canada activities for educators of students in grades 6–8. Use it to invite students to investigate wildland fire and ecosystem change. Designed to be flexible, the activities can be used as individual, stand-alone lessons, or all together as a cohesive unit of instruction using a storyline technique.
All registrants will receive an access code following the final webinar to get our Nature of Fire Activity Collection for free!
The Nature of Fire webinar series is brought to you by the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Fund.
Living with Fire
October 10, 2023, 3:00 PM–3:45 PM PT / 6:00 PM– 6:45 PM ET
The second webinar will explore Nature of Fire‘s “Living with Fire” activity, where students learn about the three elements that a fire needs to burn and find out how this “fire triangle” can be used to prevent and manage wildland fires.
Learning Outcomes
- Be able to describe the three elements of the fire triangle and explain how eliminating one (or more) can help prevent or control a fire.
- Learn ways to reduce the fire risk to homes in the wildland–urban interface.
Burning Issues
October 17, 2023, 3:00 PM–3:45 PM PT / 6:00 PM–6:45 PM ET
The final webinar will share more about Nature of Fire‘s “Burning Issues” activity, where students graph changes in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) over the course of several decades to explore the relationship among CO2, the Earth’s climate, and wildfires, and suggest ways to reduce negative effects of fire.
Learning Outcomes
- Learn how an increase in temperature is related to wildland fires.
- Explore ways to reduce the effects of elevated CO2 in the atmosphere.
