El Yunque National Forest: Community Engagement Case Study

This video case study was developed in 2022 for the "Environmental Education & Community Engagement" online course offered by Cornell University as part of the ee360+ project. We make it available for anyone interested in community engagement. Feel free to use this case study for discussions in university courses or educator workshops.

As an example, you can use questions to facilitate a discussion:

  • In the El Yunque case study, which stakeholders are involved in partnerships and collaboration?
  • Which "Community Engagement Guidelines for Excellence" does this case study illustrate, and how? (You can find PDF "Guidelines for Excellence" on the NAAEE website.)
  • What formal and nonformal educational opportunities are used to engage communities? How effective are they?
  • How would you further improve community engagement in education and stewardship at the El Yunque National Forest?
  • What ideas from this case study did you find valuable, and how can you adapt them to your own educational program?
