Teaching Climate Change Essentials: Starting February 17, 2025

6-week Asynchronous Course with Synchronous Opportunities

A 6-week online course designed to equip current elementary, middle, and high school classroom teachers with knowledge, skills, and resources to integrate climate change into their existing curriculum, regardless of their grade level or subject area. Synchronous webinars are held three times in this course, but teachers can view the webinar recording if they are unable to join live. Upon completion, 18 hours of continuing education credit will be offered.

Course Objectives:

• Explain the fundamentals of climate science literacy.
• Analyze how climate change impacts the planet and people, especially people in marginalized communities.
• Discover and adapt curricula and resources for use in classrooms and design entry points for existing K–12 curricula.
• Compare and contrast climate change solutions that teachers and students might participate in personally, locally, and globally.

Teaching Extreme Weather: Starting March 3, 2025

4-week Asynchronous Course

A 4-week online course that provides grades current 6–12 classroom science teachers with an opportunity to explore the driving forces behind extreme weather events occurring where they live, the relationship to climate change, and methods to address NGSS standards. Upon completion, 12 hours of continuing education credit will be offered.

Course Objectives:

• Explain the fundamentals of extreme weather.
• Analyze how climate change and extreme weather events are related.
• Explore regional extreme weather events in the U.S.
• Design a lesson or series of lessons that include extreme weather events.

Teaching Climate Justice: Starting March 3, 2025

4-week Asynchronous Course

A 4-week online course that gives all current K–12 classroom teachers the opportunity to explore the important topics of climate change and environmental justice. Participants explore the fundamentals of climate change, the history of the environmental and climate justice movements, the inequitable impact of climate change on marginalized communities, and ideas and solutions for how to address climate justice. Upon completion, 12 hours of continuing education credit will be offered.

Course Objectives:

• Explain the fundamentals of climate change, environmental justice, and climate justice.
• Analyze the inequitable impact climate change has on marginalized communities through various online tools.
• Explore local environmental justice knowledge.
• Design a lesson that includes climate justice.
