Citizen Science: By the People—From Data Points to Democratic Action (June–July 2026)

Course Overview: Unleash the power of collective discovery in this dynamic seven-week asynchronous virtual course designed for educators, communicators, and community leaders. Running from June 15–July 31, 2026, this graduate-level professional development opportunity invites you to move beyond being a "science tourist" and become an active leader in community-based science (CBS).

In this immersive experience, you will challenge the traditional "Middle Ages" model of demonstration science—where answers are already known—and embrace authentic, question-driven research. You will learn how to turn scientific inquiry into a vital, accessible pursuit that empowers individuals to influence critical real-world problems and policy decisions.

What You Will Learn:

  • Master the Principles of CBS: Understand the core priorities of community-based science and how these initiatives fundamentally reshape traditional scientific inquiry.
  • Hands-on Research & Data Literacy: Actively engage in the scientific process by choosing two real-world projects and contributing a total of 24 data observations to professional research networks.
  • Navigate Ethical Dilemmas: Using the core text Science by the People, you will grapple with critical dilemmas, including the politics of taking a stand, the risk of undermining professional funding, and the data treadmill of endless verification.
  • Intentional Design: Gain a "sociological imagination" to identify and proactively remove access barriers—such as equipment costs, transportation, and scheduling.
  • Professional Integration: You will not just study theory; you will leave with a concrete implementation plan (e.g., a new high school elective, public program, or curriculum) tailored to your unique professional context.
