Vihaan is an 18-year-old student from McLean, Virginia, He is attending the University of California, Berkeley studying Energy Engineering and Computer Science. He hopes to develop meaningful and efficient renewable energy solutions to aid communities in need around the world. He is a passionate climate advocate having co-founded Youth Climate Action Team (YCAT), an international nonprofit with 2000+ volunteers. YCAT aims to increase accessibility to the climate movement through education, research, and advocacy opportunities. In the organization he has focused on climate education.
He launched the Climate Extracurricular Education Branch, which organizes after-school climate lessons, interactive online content, and a climate education summer camp for elementary schoolers; the program has reached 500+ children. He has organized multiple online events featuring climate activists from diverse backgrounds to educate youth and has launched research initiatives to create opportunities to conduct real scientific research about climate change. One such initiative was the world's first completely youth-led renewable energy study, composed entirely of YCAT teen volunteers. They aimed to quantify the health benefits of nuclear, wind, and solar energy and found that renewable energy reduces deaths caused by air pollution from fossil fuel plants. He then wrote and published a scientific research paper providing their results and policy recommendations.
He also published a picture book about climate change titled “Turtle’s Climate Adventure”, a #1 release on Amazon. Working with a youth illustrator, he raised over $2500 and received multiple grants for this project. The book has been sent free of cost to 50+ Title 1 Schools and libraries serving millions of residents. He also wanted to pair the book with an activity guide, containing in-depth climate information, activities, and a template for young students to write to their representatives. He recorded and sent an audiobook version to special needs schools and is working on translating the book to make it even more accessible. Outside of his nonprofit work, he also launched a youth group working with the Fairfax County School Board to include climate education in the elementary school curriculum. The group works with curriculum staff to craft climate-based lesson plans, projects, and activities for students.
