My name is Laurie Benton. I'm thirty-two years old. I grew up in southern New Hampshire. When I was in elementary school I attended an outdoor camp called Camp Northfield where I learned about nature and skills to navigate the great outdoors. I grew up and moved to North Carolina where I went to Blue Ridge College and got my Associates degree in Horticulture Technology. I worked at the Arboretum for a couple of years and then came to Camp Merrie-Woode where I help manage and protect the camp's campus and teach kids about nature in our nature program.

I worked at the North Carolina Arboretum where I managed the formal garden crew for two years. Our crew planted, weeded, scouting for pests and helped maintain the formal garden. I designed a native garden called the Plant Of Promise and presented it to the diector and helped install it. I transistioned to Camp Merrie-Woode because I wanted to work with kids and help share my love of nature. Here at Camp I teach nature classes while also helping to maintain and protect the land. I have done some conservation work regarding transplanting White Pines from a property that was being developed and planting them on our campus.
In nature class I've taught on subjects like leave no trace, composting, gardening, identification, safety on fire building. We've also used nature as a time to reflect and be creative and do art projects. So far we have made critters out of nature we find on the ground and mandalas. They've sketched in their nature journals and have also used them to answer writing prompts regarding nature. We take nature walks every Wednesday and play games about animal food cains and nature sounds.
