Abbey Matre is a Natural Resources, Environment, and Energy Educator with University of Illinois Extension serving Cook County. Her work focuses on environmental education, conservation outreach, and connecting communities with local natural resources through programs related to habitat restoration, water conservation, and climate resilience. She is passionate about helping people build meaningful connections with the natural world and turn education into action in their communities.

Before joining Extension, Abbey worked as a Water Conservation Coordinator for Seminole County, Florida, where she supported water efficiency initiatives and public outreach programs. She also has experience working in public land management with the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service, including work as a wilderness ranger, wildland fire technician, and trail crew member. Abbey earned her master’s degree from the University of Wyoming, where her thesis explored how volunteer programs in outdoor spaces can strengthen conservation, education, and public stewardship.
