Women Water Warriors
“Women Water Warriors” is a nine-episode educational documentary series spanning the United States and Mexico, born from Director Maggie Burnette Stogner’s interviews with the subjects of her film Upstream, Downriver, where she recognized that many more urgent water justice stories remained to be told. Each episode expands on that vision, featuring powerful narratives of women leaders working to unite communities around water equity, resilience, and protection.
Across diverse regions and watersheds, the series examines the growing pressures facing waterways today, including drought, industrial pollution, exploitation, data center development, and aging infrastructure. From the headwaters of major rivers to coastal communities and rural landscapes, these challenges reveal how deeply interconnected and vulnerable water systems are.
Through the voices of frontline communities, policymakers, conservation leaders, and educators, the series highlights those who are actively organizing, innovating, and advocating for solutions to protect both waterways and drinking water supplies. Their stories demonstrate that water justice is not a distant issue, but one that shapes daily life, health, culture, and economic stability.
This series invites viewers to witness not only the urgency of the challenges we face, but the resilience and leadership of those working to address them to shape a better future for us all. The webseries itself is a free resource, and will remain free, but we will soon have an educational version that will come packaged with screening and discussion guides.
