This curriculum includes graphing and analyzing real-world data, scientific modelling to form predictions, and a citizen-science based field trip. Students investigate how Michigan's cherry trees will be altered by climate change by utilizing data from on-going research conducted at the University of Michigan. The unit includes a field trip to a local natural area during which students use Project Budburst to engage in citizen science by collecting data on plant phenology. Each of these components was designed to engage students, improve their knowledge of climate science research techniques, and connect environmental issues to concrete and real-world problems. 

All lessons were designed to align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

This unit is designed for high school students who have been introduced to scientific inquiry, energy in ecosystems, and plant structure & function.

Climate Change and the Future of Michigan Cherries was developed by students and faculty and based on climate science research at the University of Michigan's School of Environment and Sustainability.
