trubel&co, a tech-justice nonprofit, is running Data Storytelling for Sustainable Cities (DSSC), a free eight week virtual workshop teaching Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and data storytelling through an environmental justice lens. Participants turn local data into a portfolio-ready StoryMap project.

What Participants Will Build

• GIS Mapping & Data Storytelling — hands-on training applied to a topic in the participant's own community
• Sustainable Cities Focus — using local data to examine issues like resilience, contamination, or urban development
• Portfolio-Ready StoryMap Project — a completed, mentor-reviewed project participants can showcase afterward

Past projects have covered coral reef contamination in Hawaii, climate effects of urban development, post-disaster resilience, and green space access in NYC. 

Program Details

• Dates: Oct. 15 – Dec. 10, 2026 (8 weekly sessions, no session during Thanksgiving)
• Time: Thursdays, 4–6 PM PST
• Who: Ages 18–25, based in California, no GIS experience required
• Completion: Certificate awarded to those attending all live sessions
