Detecting Radiation in Our Radioactive World
Experience a full day of interactive, hands-on training from nuclear engineering education professionals. Mary Lou Dunzik-Gougar, PhD, Idaho State University, and Candace C. Davison, MS, Pennsylvania State University Radiation and Science Engineering Center, present a thorough exploration of nuclear science along with coordinating lessons that will engage and inspire your students. Topics include radiation, radioactive decay, particle physics, nuclear power and the nuclear fuel cycle. You'll learn activities such as recreating how the nucleus was discovered, how to use M&Ms to demonstrate half-life, making atoms visible to the naked eye, and discovering isotopes of elements. You'll also learn how to detect radiation using a variety of real life samples, including bananas and other common objects. Plus, you'll take home a working Geiger-Muller counter to use in your own classroom. Sponsored by the American Nuclear Society.
