Deep Dive Series: Solutions Journalism: News that Leads to Action
Meet Em and Kevin Barrett, co-founders of The Inspirer, in the kickoff Deep Dive Series webinar of the 2023 Ocean Awareness Contest. Em and Kevin struggled to find hopeful stories in a sea of sensationalized doom and gloom. After thinking, “there must be somebody out there, somewhere, who is doing something constructive,” they co-founded The Inspirer, a site highlighting evidence-based solutions to the problems on the news.
Join us on October 27 at 4 PM ET to hear from Em and Kevin about the creation of The Inspirer and to learn about the power of positive storytelling.
Speakers:
Kevin (he/him): "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead's words have guided me professionally, first during my 20+ years as the managing partner of a HR consultancy, helping leaders to align their missions to their values, and now, as co-editor of The Inspirer. We created The Inspirer to report on people working to change the world. I believe that by sharing these stories, people will see what's possible and be inspired to contribute. The world is still living unsustainably, and together we must find ways to start embracing change if we hope to achieve the U.N.'s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Em (they/them): Discovering the field of Social Anthropology, I felt very engaged with intersectional justice. I wanted to find a way to be of service for a more equitable world. As a founder of The Inspirer, I want to highlight power structures at play in the world, and how as citizens we can organise to create safer and healthier communities on all levels. I believe that if the narrative of The News changes, centering the people who are actively working on taking on our world's problems, we have a chance to thrive as a humanity.
