For 30 years my professional career has focused on building ocean literacy, environmental literacy, and science literacy among formal and informal education audiences to build community resilience to climate change and public support for a healthy, thriving ocean. I live in Asheville, North Carolina with my husband, two dogs, and a cat whose antics deserve his own Instagram account.

In May 2025, I retired from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Education where I co-founded and co-led the agency’s Environmental Literacy Program developing a national portfolio of educational grants and partnerships in support of NOAA’s mission.

A long-time advocate for ocean literacy, I was a leader of the development of the foundational Ocean Literacy Framework (www.oceanliteracynmea.org), which is now used internationally to connect ocean health, climate, and human well-being.  I still advocate for the use of the Ocean Literacy Framework through the Ocean Literacy Committee of the National Marine Educator’s Association.

In my new role as an independent consultant, I continue to champion the idea that education is essential infrastructure for resilient communities and a thriving ocean.

I have a B.A. in philosophy and history of science and mathematics from St. John’s College and a M.S. in Marine Studies from the University of Delaware.
