I serve as the Sustainability Coordinator for Douglas County School District (DCSD) in Colorado, where I lead district-wide sustainability initiatives across more than 88 schools serving approximately 62,000 students. My work sits at the intersection of operations and education, integrating real-world systems, such as energy, water, waste, and outdoor learning, into meaningful, student-centered learning experiences.
I manage a $14M utility portfolio and oversee energy programs that include nearly 3 million kWh of on-site solar generation, strategic energy management practices, and district-wide benchmarking compliance. Through data-driven decision-making and operational improvements, my work has resulted in nearly $4M in avoided utility costs while maintaining 100% compliance with Colorado’s building benchmarking requirements.
In addition to my operational role, I lead environmental education and student engagement efforts across the district. I have helped grow DCSD’s outdoor learning and garden program from approximately 20 sites to over 40 active spaces, many of which integrate food systems, composting, biodiversity, and place-based learning into daily instruction. I co-developed district-wide programming such as the EngagED Energy Challenge through the Colorado Association of School District Energy Managers, empowering students to analyze real-time energy data and drive behavior change within their schools.
I also design and facilitate professional development for educators, including Green U, an annual sustainability-focused learning event that connects teachers with local partners and resources. I collaborate closely with organizations such as Douglas Land Conservancy, Denver Audubon, and Douglas County Conservation District to expand access to outdoor and environmental learning opportunities for students and staff.
My work has been supported by more than $950,000 in grants and sponsorships, advancing initiatives in circular economy practices, composting, school gardens, and outdoor classrooms. I am currently pursuing my Master Certification in Environmental Education through the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education and have been recognized for my leadership with awards, including Conservationist of the Year, NWF Green Flag Award, and U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Award. I also served on the CASDEM board, contributing to statewide collaboration and innovation in school sustainability programs.
I am passionate about creating systems where sustainability is not an add-on, but an integrated part of how schools operate and how students learn. I believe that when students can see, measure, and participate in real-world environmental solutions, it builds lasting understanding, stewardship, and hope for the future.
