A Curriculum for Climate Literacy

"Young people are demanding better climate education. Employers are calling for green skills. Yet research shows that many students leave school unaware of even the basic concepts of climate change – and what it means for their futures.

Recent government data (UK), provided by the Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) climate literacy survey, shows that barely half of school leavers recall being taught about climate change, and many are not aware of the action already being taken in the UK to adapt to or prevent future climate change."

In this School Management Plus piece, author Sylvia Knight highlights the need for multidisciplenary approaches to climate education and offers one tool for accomplishing this task: The Curriculum for Climate Literacy—a framework created by RMetS that identifies where and when climate concepts can and should be taught across a student’s journey through school. This 34-page document provides age-appropriate and specialty-specific guidance on which and why climate topics should be incorporated into existing coursework.
