Exploring Phenomena: Using Science to Figure Things Out
Contact Contra Costa County Office of Education and California Academy of Sciences invite K-12 educators, including administrators (site or district), instructional coaches, and classroom teachers to
Exploring Phenomena: Using Science to Figure Things Out in Pleasant Hill, CA on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM (PDT).
The NGSS require a shift from “learning about” to “figuring out.” How did the Grand Canyon form?” “Where did the mass of the apple go when I threw it in the compost?” These questions about real-world phenomena are great examples of how science can be used for figuring things out. In this workshop attendees will participate as learners in a phenomenon-based lesson, then unpack the experience with fellow educators. Participants will gain strategies to help choose phenomena and craft essential questions that can guide students to figure things out about the real world.
This workshop is designed for K-12 educators, instructional coaches, and administrators. Participants will receive resources and materials on how to use phenomena in their own science notebooks and how to further incorporate science notebooking into their classroom.
Cost: $110 per participant
Continental Breakfast and Lunch will be provided.
