Keshi Satterwhite is the Founder and Executive Director of Planning Ahead, a nonprofit advancing environmental education, climate resilience, and community-led preparedness in Durham and Raleigh, North Carolina. Her work centers on translating environmental and climate science into accessible, culturally responsive learning experiences that empower residents, practitioners, and local leaders to take action.
A signature body of her work is From Crisis to Readiness: A Replicable, Community-Designed Flood Readiness Model for Pluvial Flooding, which equips communities with the knowledge, tools, and collective strategies needed to prepare for and respond to increasingly frequent flood events. The model prioritizes lived experience, shared leadership, and practical, low-cost actions that strengthen household and neighborhood resilience.
Keshi designs and facilitates workshops, learning networks, and advisory committees focused on watershed stewardship, flood readiness, extreme heat, and environmental justice. She previously led the Walnut Creek Watershed Learning Network (WCWLN), a multi-week community education initiative connecting residents with watershed science, local infrastructure systems, and nature-based solutions. Her approach emphasizes meaningful engagement, community knowledge, and actionable outcomes.
As an Adaptation Practitioner with the Climate Smart Communities Initiative (CSCI), Keshi supports community-based climate resilience planning and implementation. She brings over a decade of experience in program management, operations, and partnership development, ensuring initiatives are well-designed, well-executed, and aligned with community priorities.
In addition to her nonprofit work, Keshi leads A Healing Place, an environmental consulting practice offering climate risk assessments, sustainability reporting, and stakeholder engagement support. Across all of her work, she is committed to equity-centered environmental education that builds readiness, strengthens local capacity, and advances long-term community resilience.
