First GEEP Regional Office Launched in Taiwan
With the launch of the GEEP Asia-Pacific Regional Center on December 3, 2019, in Taichung, Taiwan, the GEEP took its first step in supporting networks on a regional level.
In the opening speech, Minister Chang Tzi-Chin of the Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan (EPA Taiwan) acknowledges the effort put into the two-year planning period of the center and its potential in strengthening environmental education in the region. William Brent Christensen, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan, also commended the long-term friendship and cooperation between the US and Taiwan, while director Mark Kasman of the Office of International and Tribal Affairs of the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) mentioned that this institutionalization of global environmental education leadership will show how policy, partnership, innovation, and community can drive local and global environmental literacy.
The GEEP Asia-Pacific Regional Office is located on the campus of the National Taichung University of Education, and will be jointly operated by EPA Taiwan, the US EPA, Taichung City Government, and the North American Association for Environmental Education. The center aims to support local, national, and regional environmental policy-making and implementation by providing opportunities for training, technical support, leadership, information sharing, and professional development.
The opening ceremony was also witnessed by Tommy Kambu Kunji of the Papua New Guinea Trade Office in Taiwan, Arthur A. Abiera Jr., Director of the Taichung Extension Office, and representatives of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office and the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
