Sustainability is improving human and environmental wellbeing both now and into the future. Sustainability as an academic field of study is relatively new and methods for teaching transformative sustainability are still being developed. Just as the definition of sustainability includes improving human wellbeing, the way that we educate for sustainability should be grounded in inclusivity. We are seeking a graduate student to conduct research that evaluates best practices for inclusivity in sustainability education.

We are pleased to announce that the Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship committee is now accepting submissions.

Dr. Herman’s family, colleagues, and friends established the Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship in 2017 to honor his legacy by promoting the type of research that was the focus of his groundbreaking studies. The Scholarship is given every two years in the amount of $5,000.

In the spring and summer of 2020, an interdisciplinary, multi-institution research team will undertake a study of attitudes towards seals and sharks among voters, tourists and commercial fishermen on Cape Cod. The study is a collaboration among Salem State University, University of Massachusetts, Boston, Tufts University Center for Animals and Public Policy, Center for Coastal Studies, Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, and the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance. The project seeks to generate knowledge about stakeholder views and experiences with seals and sharks. This research will provide the basis for an engagement plan in Spring 2021 to enable managers, policy makers, and non-governmental organizations to foster coexistence, enhance public safety, and mitigate seal and shark-related conflicts. The research also will result in academic presentations and publications.

Fellows across North America work in communities of color, low-income urban neighborhoods, impoverished rural regions, and across multi-state regions to mitigate the impacts of environmental degradation on communities by helping them become more resilient to the pressing challenges.

The Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy (ICRLP) at American University (AU) invites applications for full-time, postdoctoral researchers to work on a new project aimed at the better integration of carbon removal approaches into two integrated assessment models (IAMs). The first appointment is a two-year position and will commence January 2, 2020 and run through January 2022. The second appointment is a one-year position (extendable to two years depending on the securing of additional funding) and will commence January 2, 2020 and run at least through January 2021.
