Next Wave EE: Highlighting EE Certificates and Programs

What are some options for advanced training in environmental education? Our panelists will share about their programs (The College of New Jersey and Hamline University). They will also share highlights about their scholarship. Both of these programs are accredited by the North American Association for Environmental Education.
Panelist bios:
Louise Ammentorp, PhD, is a Professor in the Elementary and Early Childhood Education department at The College of New Jersey. Her research emphasizes innovative approaches to teacher preparation and professional development, with a focus on integrating nature and the arts into the curriculum, outdoor education, and social-emotional learning (SEL). Her books include Impactful Practices for Early Childhood Teacher Education; Using Photography and Other Arts-based Methods with English Language Learners: Guidance, Resources and Activities for K-12 Educators; and most recently, Let Nature Be Your Teacher: Integrating Nature-Based Learning in the Elementary Classroom.
Lauren Madden, PhD, is a Professor of Elementary Science Education at The College of New Jersey, USA. Her research has been supported by grants from the New Jersey SeaGrant Consortium, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She holds a PhD in Science Education, MS in Marine Science, and BA in Earth Sciences with a focus on oceanography. Her current research and teaching focuses directly on climate change education, specifically in primary school settings in New Jersey. Her expertise has been featured prominently in many media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, The Guardian, NPR, and the Star Ledger.
Patty Born, EdD, is the program director for the Master of Arts in natural sciences and environmental education at Hamline University in St Paul MN. The program also offers environmental education certificates, including nature based-early learning and climate literacy. There is an annual study away experience, taking students to places as far flung as the Galapagos, Costa Rica and Mexico. Dr. Born’s research interests are in elementary school teachers’ use of nature as a context, nature‘s role in social emotional development, and human animal relationships.
