Lesson 1: Terminology

As with many subjects, it is very important to first define some of the terms used when talking about equitable and inclusive environmental education.

In this short animated video, Anne Umali from NAAEE and Queta Gonzalez from the Center for Diversity and the Environment introduce the key concepts we'll be exploring in this learning module, with illustration by Susan Chung of Co-Design Group.

Queta's definitions are adapted from the UC Berkeley Strategic Plan for Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity:

Equity

Equity is the guarantee of fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement... while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups. The principle of equity acknowledges that there are historically underserved and underrepresented populations and that fairness regarding these unbalanced conditions is needed to assist equality in the provision of effective opportunities to all groups.

Inclusion

Inclusion is the act of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate. An inclusive and welcoming climate embraces differences and offers respect in words and actions for all people.
