The Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Sustainable Urban Development provides outstanding students an opportunity to pursue in-depth and rigorous research about the pressing challenges of urban sustainability and the processes of environmental, economic, and social development in urban environments around the world.

DPhil students are usually motivated to undertake detailed research in preparation for an academic career and other research-intensive occupations; to have a substantial impact on future policy-making processes; or to pursue and/or advance their professional career at organizations and institutions operating in the field of sustainable urban development.

The course provides students with support and an intellectual environment by leading scholars in the field to pursue independent research.

The MSc course exposes students to sustainable urbanism as both an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary subject at global and local scales. Attention is paid to the intellectual history of sustainable urban development, its current and future applications and practice, and the contemporary relevance of research to sustainable urban policy and practice across the world.

The MSc aims to provide students with a multidisciplinary structure that engages with world-leading research to the benefit of students’ professional practice, an international understanding and knowledge of sustainable urban development and engagement with the academic excellence of the University of Oxford.
