Why Diversity and Inclusion
One of the major hurdles in the environmental education field is the lack of staff diversity and know-how in connecting with under represented audiences who have been historically marginalized by EE. The challenge is that diversity and inclusion does not happen by itself. It takes long term committed leadership, awareness and a willingness to be uncomfortable. Leadership must find a way to communicate across race, class, gender, age and cultural lines. That means developing organizations that encourage questions and collaboration to equip both staff members and their education program stakeholders to reach their full potential. This requires diligent support and networking for professionals passionate about advancing inclusion in the field, including professionals of color who may need professional development, mentoring and collaboration to meet their unique needs. The goal of the Diversity, Inclusion and Equity eePro Group is to be a resource that provides leaders with strategies to recruit, manage and maintain a diverse staff, and to provide resources to better serve our diverse communities with culturally and socially relevant and empowering environmental education programs.
