“Environmental education” as we know it today was born at the University of Michigan (UM) in the 1960s as a result of a collaboration between Dr. Bill Stapp and his students. What is now UM’s School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) has over 8,000 active alumni working in natural resources, environment, and sustainability across non-profit organizations, corporate businesses, and government agencies. Among these alumni are over 500 leading national and international environmental educators, including faculty members listed in this database. Dr. Michaela Zint joined UM after Dr. Stapp’s retirement in 1996 and is SEAS’ primary environmental education faculty member. Other SEAS faculty, including Drs. Ray De Young, Bob Grese, and Dorecta Taylor, also regularly work with MS and PhD students on innovative environmental and sustainability education initiatives. UM’s undergraduate Program in the Environment and graduate SEAS MS and PhD programs offer introductory and advanced environmental and sustainability education courses, a broad range of natural and social science (including environmental justice), engineering, and design classes, and enable students to gain interdisciplinary expertise in cities/built environment, climate and energy, conservation/restoration, food, or water. Environmental education students also have the opportunity to complete courses in, or obtain additional degrees from UM’s other leading national schools such as the School of Education, Business, Public Health, Public Policy, or Social Work.
