University of Michigan's Sustainability Cases Galaxy 2018 Conference

The University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability is hosting Galaxy 2018 from June 7-9, our inaugural annual Sustainability Learning Exchange. Held in beautiful Ann Arbor, MI, the conference features a three-day, hands-on Case Innovation Studio in which participants workshop their existing research/educational materials into multimedia cases for more effective training, outreach, and communication.

By the end of the conference, participants will know the ins and outs of multimedia casestudy design and pedagogy. Participants will be among the first to gain access to the new authorship functionality of our open access platform, Gala—they will be able to post their own case study on Gala, embed media resources, and build online discussion communities using our in-line forum.

The Studio will be complemented by a constellation of community engagement events, kicking off with a Case Premiere at the Michigan Theater on Friday, June 8 from 4pm-6pm centered on water justice issues. Held in the Michigan Theater's Main Auditorium, in partnership with the Cinetopia Film Festival, we will be screening Leana Hosea's film, Thirst for Justice followed by a 40-min facilitated panel discussion and a 20-min public Q&A. Our Director, Prof. Rebecca Hardin will be facilitating a conversation on water contamination, remediation, community action, and public/private decision-making.

On Saturday, June 9, our discussion of water issues will continue as the public, academic and civic communities convene for a Policy in Practice Charrette focused on the contamination of Ann Arbor’s groundwater with 1,4-dioxane. This will be a chance for participants to learn how different stakeholder groups negotiate and navigate the policy process, how scientific knowledge and uncertainty impact responses to environmental problems, and ways to promote better cross-stakeholder communication.

I would like to encourage anyone interested in attending to get in touch with me! I'm able to offer a discounted registration fee for members of the NAEE network. There are also full scholarships available and the application is posted on our website.
