My Waste My Way: Fulbright - National Geographic Storytelling Contest
Contest Theme #1: Recycle, Reuse, Reduce to save the Earth. One person’s trash is another’s treasure. Combine creativity and artistic ability to fashion trash into art! Use your trash from one or several days to create a bold recycled masterpiece showing how “trash” really is a matter of perception. Take a digital photo showcasing your masterwork with a maximum 250-word description describing the art piece, what trash materials used, and how the art should change the perception of trash by the viewer. Submit an unedited digital photo of trash fashioned into art!
SUBMISSION RULES:
- The contest will continue every three weeks from October 2017 – June 2018.
- Participants will have 1 week to submit their content to the contest (see submission window).
- Limited to one entry per person, or one entry per group.
- Submissions must be uploaded to Instagram and tag @lillysedaghat.
- For parents/teachers concerned with privacy issues, teachers can create a “classroom account;” students can submit their image and caption to the teacher, who can then upload & post work using the “classroom account.” If this method is selected, please be sure to specify the student’s name in the caption, so entries from the same account.
- In the caption of your submission, please include the following 6 items:
o Your Name
o Your School
o Grade Level
o Caption describing your submission. Please also include a maximum 250-word description describing your art piece, the trash materials used, and how your art can change the perception of trash. o Include the hashtag: #MyWasteMyWay
o Be sure to tag: @lillysedaghat
ANNOUNCING CONTEST THEME:
- USA P.S.T. – Every third Sunday at 5:00 pm
- USA E.S.T. – Every third Sunday at 8:00 pm
• Every 3-weeks, following the submission timeline, @lillysedaghat will post an infographic on her Instagram page outlining the:
o Contest Theme
o Submission Window
o Prize
o Date the winner will be announced.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU WIN?
- One week after the end of the submission window, the winner will be announced.
- The winner’s submission will be featured on the National Geographic Voices Blog! (https://voices.nationalgeographic.org/blog/fulbright-national-geographic-stories/)
- Winners will be announced on Lilly’s Instagram page (@lillysedaghat), their submission will be reposted on Lilly’s Instagram and Facebook (@MyWasteMyWay) page.
- Lilly will then contact the winner through Direct Message and ask for the best address to mail them their prize. For students, the prize will be mailed to their school.
- Please expect the prize to arrive 3-4 weeks following confirmation of address from the winner.
- Prizes will all consist of green, reusable materials and accessories to help support the mission of living an environmentally sustainable life.
CONTEST TIMELINE for Theme #1:
- Submission Window: Sunday, 10/15 – Sunday, 10/22, 2017
- Winner Announced: USA – Friday, 10/27 @ 5:00pm PST / 8:00pm EST
- Prize: Reusable utensils kit, including spoon, fork, and chopsticks, AND a special Pink Thermos from the International Food Waste Management Forum
