Informal Education & Interpretation Online Graduate Program

IEI Program Intro

Canisius University in Western New York is offering a brand new Master’s program in Informal Education and Interpretation starting this coming fall, 2023. This innovative, online graduate program is designed for anyone interested in education outside of the traditional classroom setting and should appeal to professionals and volunteers at museums, zoos, aquariums, historical sites, and other cultural institutions; recent graduates interested in education beyond formal secondary and higher education; and lifelong learning enthusiasts looking to affect a potential career switch.

The curriculum will include a suite of core courses that cover the foundations of informal education and interpretation, educational design and technology, non-profit leadership, educational program development and assessment, and developmental psychology. Students will be able to custom-design the remainder of their program by choosing from a selection of specialist electives, and completing a mentored capstone project.

Courses will be delivered online with both asynchronous and synchronous components to allow students schedule flexibility. An opportunity to travel to Canisius for an in-person week of workshops, field trips, and community building activities will be provided each year.

Applications are currently open for Fall 2023 with a priority deadline of August 1st, but will be accepted until the first week of September. Please see our admissions website for requirements and application instructions.
