Education for Sustainability Summer Institute

The annual Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation - CELF - Summer Institute in Education for Sustainability (EfS) is a multi-day immersive professional learning experience for K-12 classroom teachers, school leaders, future teachers and non-formal educators.  After 15 years of running our Summer Institute in Westchester, we are expanding the experience to NYC this year. Our 2019 theme is "Incorporating Inquiry, Place and Action for Sustainable Schools." As always, the CELF Summer Institute provides K-12 curriculum design support to integrate sustainability principles and practices into existing curricula across all content areas.  Teachers are eligible for CTLE credits if they complete the program.

Highlights include:

GeoInquiry: training in National Geographic's process of using a geographic lens to analyze space, place and interconnections between humans and the natural world

Citizen Science: Incorporate place- and project-based learning to leverage expertise in your school community and develop student advocacy.

Ecological Literacy:  Connect sustainability concepts and United Nations Global Goals to NGSS and STEM learning.

Whole Systems Change: Engage in activities that model systemic change for sustainability.

We have found the Summer Institute experience to be most effective when a team of teachers is able to attend together, because with the support of their colleagues, they amplify the take home benefits when they return to their schools in the new year.

Dates in Westchster: July 15-18, 2019

Dates in NYC: July 29-31, 2019
