I did not start off as a traditional science teacher. I worked as a fly fishing guide for 7 years and found myself subbing as a teacher for income in the winter season. I enjoyed it enough that I went back and got my teacher degree as a special education teacher. After 12 years of teaching special education and not feeling like I was making a difference because I worked with paperwork more than my students, I went and got my biology certification.
I have been teaching science now for four years. I have taught every subject from 7th grade Earth Science to Anatomy and Physics. Being a small school in a rural area I try to get my students outside as much as possible. We have been completing stream surveying for the past four years and would love to have my students do this for years to come and then present the findings to local interest groups that have stock in the economy and environment. Getting my students to take pride in their work and working on communication skills presenting to the public will be skills that they can use into adulthood.
My students are currently working on changing the state fossil. This has been a great project for my students and have had the opportunity to be involved with geolgy and government. Hopefully within the 2026 year the state fossil will be changed to the Hynerpeton. This fossil was found about 1 mile from our school and is one of the first documented pieces of evidence of a creature walking on land and breathing air.
