Hello! I am April Engelmeier, a current fellow of the California Climate Action Corps representing the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation. I am a passionate environmentalist who loves anything outdoors - running, climbing, camping, etc. I am originally from San Luis Obispo, California, and moved to San Diego for this opportunity to pursue climate action across San Diego's parks! I studied Environmental Science and Management in college, and am excited to learn more about environmental education specifically.

I am representing the California Climate Action Corps through my host site, the San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation. With over 160 parks and facilities, I help to implement climate action county-wide. This often takes place through tree plantings, native plant plantings, invasive species removal, and trail clearings. Through Volunteer Services with the County, I recruit community members to help with the events we put on, creating a lasting impact for the County abroad. While most of my work so far has been through volunteer-led climate action events, this summer my fellowship will shift to focus more on climate education, since summer months are not fit for plantings or field work. I am looking forward to this class to equip me with tools on how to educate a range of audiences on the topics I am so passionate about. Before this position, I held a variety of jobs and internships, both through my university (UC Davis), and outside of it. With experiences such as being a Sustainability Peer Educator for the UC Davis Office of Sustainability, or a Post-Fire Field Monitoring Technician for CAL FIRE, I grew an appreciation for all things environmental. As I prepare for my Master's this upcoming fall in Climate Science and Policy at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, I hope to gain valuable skills in climate education through these next few months in the AEOE course.
