Resources for Starting a Conservation Career
The resources and opportunities for conservation careers can be quite overwhelming when you are first getting started. Where do you look? Is it voluntourism or something that will stand out on a resume? It would be impossible to outline everything that is out there in just a few paragraphs, but here are some of the MVPs of resources and experiences.
Conservation-Careers.com is perhaps one of the most valuable resources I have come across. They provide many free resources including guides that help you discover what kind of opportunities are out there and which type is best for you (https://www.conservation-careers.com/conservation-internships-and-volunteering/), an ebook about switching careers to the conservation field, a job board, a training opportunity board (online and in-person classes), and even a resource library.
Conservationjobboard.com allows you to sort job opportunities by subject, but also by type (including permanent, temporary, paid internship, and unpaid). They have an active Facebook page with opportunities posted daily or you can also subscribe to receive job alerts by email.
Do you have an interest in seeing the world and making a difference at the same time? Check out global opportunities with World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (wwoof.net). Volunteers can work around the world on organic farms and learn valuable skills in exchange for accomodation and meals. Please note that the program is not entirely free - travel, insurance, visas, and some other expenses are not covered - but you can have some confidence in knowing that the program is legitimate and that many countries even have national coordinators that can help answer questions.
And, of course, we cannot forget our very own NAAEE. Jobs, internships, learning opportunities, grants, group discussions, research, and other resources are already at your fingertips if you are reading this. Dig into then sit, read the newsletters, and get ready to get started.
