My Name Is Michael Cox, I am the Education Specialist at Ocean Wise Conservation. Ocean Wise is an international conservation organization with a 65-year history of successes, Ocean Wise is a trusted partner for governments, industries, and communities around the world. Our greatest strength is our ability to drive deep change by making ocean conservation matter to everyone – from everyday citizens to global policy leaders.

Youth are the key to creating meaningful and lasting change for our ocean, our communities and our future. We’re committed to empowering and amplifying their voices and actions, so this generation of ocean conservation champions have the platform and tools they need to accelerate their efforts.

Every year, we connect over 500,000 youth to ocean and climate literacy programs, equipping them with the information and real-world applications needed to take action. Our diverse team of professional educators, biologists and mentors engage in thousands of hours of programs annually, including service-learning, online education and mobile programs. Together, we’re providing opportunities for all ocean ambassadors to create, contribute to, and carry-on conservation efforts that ensure our future is one where our ocean flourishes

I have had a passion for wildlife and conservation since I was a child. Following secondary school, I attended Trent University where I completed my BSc in Biology, during which I worked with the Ontario Government with the endangered Woodland Caribou population. I followed this consecutively with a BEd in Primary and Junior Education. In the time since, I have returned to school to upgrade my qualifications to include Special Education and Resource teaching, Intermediate Health and Physical Education, as well as Intermediate Science.

After my formal education, I relocated to Sweden where I worked as a science teacher, working with grades 4-6, and was recognized for my passion by being the youngest teacher in the history of the organization elevated to the Head of Science position.

Following three years in Sweden, I returned to Canada, working as a teacher for Ontario boards where I taught grades K-8 in many different positions, including Special Education and Kindergarten.

After 8 years as an educator, I left the public education field to work with Ocean Wise to create and refine teacher education programs and free resources for teachers to work in the non-profit sector using my passion, training, and experience as an asset to increase outreach an engagement with our resources, and ocean conservation in the classroom.
