Since 1873, Arnold Arboretum plant propagators have been instrumental in providing direction and leadership on woody plant propagation to other gardens and arboreta, the nursery industry, and the public. This rich history was carved out by the Arboretum’s inaugural plant propagator, Jackson Dawson, and the other successive propagators, who have pioneered aspects of seed and clonal propagation over the last 150 years.
Reporting to the Head of Public Programs, the Program Manager (PM) for Visitor Engagement manages the Arnold Arboretum’s on-site visitor engagement and educational services. Using current learning methods and approaches, the Program Manager strategically designs in-person learning opportunities, serving tens of thousands of adult learners each year.
The Program Manager for Visitor Engagement manages all aspects of the Arnold Arboretum’s on-site, visitor engagement, and educational services.The Program Manager works cross-departmentally with the Digital Programs and Content Manager, Manager of Children’s Education, and departmental leadership to set goals for visitor engagement activities that include an emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and environmental justice. The PM also leads a team of four staff to deliver visitor services.
The Head of Public Programs leads and manages Arnold Arboretum’s public program initiatives, which include visitor and youth education as well as community outreach and engagement. They not only advocate for innovative public programming to connect with a broad audience, but they also diversify its reach in both content and delivery methods. The Head manages a dynamic team, including a currently open position, the Program Manager for Visitor Engagement.
The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is seeking candidates for its 2018 Visitor Engagement Fellowship (a two-year term appointment). The Visitor Engagement Fellow is part of the Arboretum’s Education and Public Programs team and supports projects and initiatives that encourage visitors to engage with the Arboretum's celebrated plant collection and rich history.
