The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization, seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire a team of 5 local, young adult participants in the completion of conservation projects at multiple sites in Southeast Alaska. Typical projects include trail maintenance and construction, exotic plant management, erosion control, wild food gathering, and habitat restoration. Teams will live and work together during the work week, Monday through Friday, for two weeks of training and ten weeks at remote field camps. During their time in the field they have the opportunity to build a small community. The Project Leader will also coordinate training and field work together with the primary project partner, the Tongass National Forest. Project Leaders are an integral part of the success of our teams and they will be expected to strive for proactive communication, create a culture of growth, and professionally represent themselves and SCA.

The Project Leader position is filled with a diversity of tasks and responsibilities and offers a great opportunity to highly motivated candidates who are looking for an engaging and challenging atmosphere. For this project, the Western Roving team will travel to different federal agency field sites around the Western United States completing work projects at each site. Projects may include: trail work, wildland fire fuels reduction, wilderness restoration, data surveys, facilities maintenance, fence construction or repair, and invasive species monitoring and/or removal.

Alaska’s Regional High School Crews consist of two leaders and a crew of 6-8 youth (aged 15-19) from across Alaska. Crews live and work in parks, forests, and refuges across Alaska. Leaders camp with their crews in frontcountry or backcountry sites and work to complete conservation projects. Typical programs are four weeks in length and run from June through August.
