Join John Muir Laws for a Nature Journaling Workshop for Teachers

WHAT IS THE WILD WONDER NATURE JOURNALING TEACHERS CONFERENCE?

Join John Muir Laws and Emilie Lygren–co-authors of the book How to Teach Nature Journaling–as well as other nature journaling educators from around the world for a two-day live online workshop, June 21-22, 2021, before the Wild Wonder Nature Journaling Conference. Evening speakers include Rob Wade, Outdoor Education and Science Coordinator for the Plumas County Office of Education, who will speak about his district-wide k-12 nature journaling program; and Anne Stephens, assistant professor from CSU Chico, who will present her research focused on nature journaling and how it aligns with Next Generation Science Standards.

This workshop is for anyone who is teaching in any form. This includes formal classroom educators, but also homeschool parents, park rangers, adult education instructors, nature centers, scout leaders, environmental educators, and more.

You will come away from this workshop empowered with best practices and practical tools for teaching nature journaling, and you will be prepared to put them into practice with your students.

The goals of this workshop are to help educators:

  • Understand the fundamental principles and practices of nature journaling and be able to communicate its value to students;
  • Understand how nature journaling reinforces language arts, visual arts, math, science, social-emotional learning, and more;
  • Feel empowered with the tools and confidence to teach nature journaling in your own setting, whether that’s homeschool, adult education, a traditional classroom, or online learning;
  • Learn how to give appropriate feedback that reinforces a growth mindset;
  • Experience nature journaling activities specifically adapted for online teaching; and
  • Connect with and learn from other nature journaling teachers.

WHAT IS NATURE JOURNALING?

In its simplest form, nature journaling is collecting and organizing your observations, questions, connections, and explanations on the pages of a notebook using words, pictures, and numbers. Keeping an illustrated, observational journal is a centuries-old method that has been reenvisioned and refined through the lens of our understanding of neuroscience, learning, and deliberate practice. A nature journal is a lens that focuses our attention and crystallizes our observations, thoughts, and experiences.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

The cost for the 2-day virtual workshop is just $35. We have a limited number of scholarships available (see the webpage for details and application link).
