Information, Voice, Power: Enabling Girl-led Action on Climate Change

Across the globe, we are seeing that girls are already taking exemplary action from the local to global levels. However, the restrictive cultural and societal norms that permeate most areas of girls’ lives, also impact girls’ ability to exercise agency and their basic right to participate. Additionally, girls often lack access to age and context appropriate education and knowledge about climate change.

For the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, this side event brings together partners of the ‘Girl-led Action on Climate Change’ programme, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) along with YUNGA to explore:

  • How do we ensure that girls from diverse backgrounds, are listened to, can make their priorities heard and have a seat at the table?
  • What is the role of context and age-appropriate climate change education in equipping girls to lead change?
  • What is the status of girl-led action on climate change and how can the international community support emerging girl-led action on climate change?

Leading up to CSW66 and in partnership with UNICEF's U-Report, a group of Girl U-Report Ambassadors have led the development and rollout of a multi-country poll. During this girl-led event, the girls will present important insights into the status of girl’s activism and agency in climate change and their perceptions of its gendered impact.

This will be a dynamic and interactive girl-led event, that will bring young women from across WAGGGS, YOUNGO and YUNGA together with decision-makers to discuss how they can be collaborators in their activism and how we together can create an enabling environment for girl-led action on climate change.
