Connect to Exploration in Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary

Join us remotely as we conduct state-of-the-art ocean research in Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary with the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration (GFOE).

You will be able to watch the expedition live on GFOE’s web page.

Little is known about deep-sea regions of the ocean. This is why we are teaming up with the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration in Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico to explore and research mesophotic coral and sponge communities.

GFOE’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Yogi and a cutting edge mobile satellite communication system will take you beneath the surface and into the sanctuary to conduct research and explore the reefs through a stunning live video feed. The first leg of the expedition (August 14-18) will focus on coral reef biodiversity and connectivity by identifying fish and invertebrate species that call the reefs home. The second leg (August 21-25) will provide a unique opportunity to view the first direct observation of mesophotic coral spawning on these reefs as we conduct mostly night dives. The final leg of the expedition (August 28-September 1) will answer key questions about black corals and their biology. For dive times, please visit GFOE’s website.

Dive deeper into ocean exploration by using our education resources about deep-sea corals, marine technology, and your national marine sanctuaries. Deepen your understanding of Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary through their education materials as well. These resources include lesson plans, curriculum, videos, and activities.

Interested in exploring more national marine sanctuaries? This expedition is one of many sanctuary exploration cruises that will be underway this year. NOAA competitively awarded $3.5 million to the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration, Ocean Exploration Trust, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for deep-water exploration, research, education and outreach in your National Marine Sanctuary System in 2019. Each expedition will emphasize education and outreach to engage and inspire the next generation of innovators, explorers, and scientists.
