In FY23, Gulf B-WET funding will support student investigation of environmental topics and issues, both locally and globally, that are of interest to them. Students identify actions to address these issues and understand the value of those actions, enabling them to help to protect and restore watersheds and related ocean and coastal ecosystems. Gulf B-WET funding also supports high-quality professional development for teachers allowing them to gain confidence in the value of MWEEs and strategies for conducting MWEEs with students. Gulf B-WET also supports the implementation of systemic MWEEs which reach the entire student population in one or more grades within a school district. Again this year, Gulf B-WET will support capacity building for expanded statewide K-12 environmental literacy initiatives. Such projects will advance environmental literacy strategies and lay the foundation for sustainable and equitable environmental literacy, including MWEEs, at the state or multi-state level.

New for FY23! In an effort to support diverse or new projects, up to 60% of Gulf of Mexico B-WET funding will be set aside for new applicants. Therefore, the total funding amount for applicants that have successfully received direct BWET funding in the past will be limited to approximately 40%.

The purpose for this financial assistance is to support our communities by developing well-informed members of society involved in decision-making that positively impacts our coastal, marine, and watershed ecosystems in the Hawaiian Islands. This is a competitive opportunity for grants to assist in the development of new programs, encourage innovative partnerships among environmental education programs, and support geographically targeted programs to advance environmental education efforts that complement national and state school requirements. The Hawaii B-WET program plays a foundational role as an environmental education program that promotes locally relevant, experiential learning in the K-12 environment on Priority Content Areas such as Earth science, climate science, and indigenous local knowledge models for all sciences. Funded projects provide Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences for students and professional development for teachers that support regional education and environmental priorities. More information about the B-WET program is online at https://www.noaa.gov/office-education/bwet.
