If you are an experienced Fish Hatchery Technician looking for a challenge and wishing to use your expertise to protect and conserve salmon and their natural habitats, then this is the job for you!
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) currently operates 75 hatchery facilities, the majority dedicated to producing salmon and/or steelhead.
Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Kalama River in 1895.
We are seeking highly motivated Fish Hatchery Technicians to work alongside a diverse team to support salmon conservation while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational opportunities in the state of Washington.

These are opportunities to perform sound fish culture practices and assist in identifying, sorting, and sampling species for spawning and adult distribution.
Picture yourself performing scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties and trap sites, rearing anadromous (fish that spend most of their adult lives at sea, but return to fresh water to spawn) and non-anadromous species of fish.

Our Fish Hatchery Technician,
Feeds fish according to pond populations and weight samples – adjusts feed size and amount of fed.
Assists in identifying, sorting, and sampling species for spawning and adult distribution.
Identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling.
Assists in identifying all targeted and non-targeted species, gender, stock origin and condition of maturity when trapping and spawning adults.
Performs maintenance duties in and around hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment as directed.
Assists in loading fish for transport using a variety of methods such as: electric fish pump, brail and crane.
Assists in scanning fish for various tags using coded wire tag wands, pit tag detectors, and other tag associated equipment.
Work Setting, including hazards:
Work is performed outside in all weather conditions.
Typically, work schedule is 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, occasional 10 days on 4 days off, adjusted by workload.
Travel as needed to meet work demands.
Tools and Equipment:
Power and hand tools, lawn care equipment, egg picking machines, passenger vehicles, CWT identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers and software.
Communicating effectively with public and volunteers; interaction with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis.
High School Diploma or GED.
A valid driver’s license is required.
Six (6) months of experiences working at a fish hatchery.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Vacation (Annual Leave) You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us.
